Sewage Treatment Techniques

Alternative wastewater treatment
May I have a glass of (waste)water, please?
Sewage consists of liquid waste from kitchens, toilets, laundry machines, sinks, etc. as well as liquid waste from industrial and commercial processes. Why should we treat this “wastewater”? “Wastewater” contains valuable nutrients which can be redistributed. One only needs to purify the water in order to do so. Insufficient sewage treatment facilities can result in hazardous health effects. Waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhus are often caused by poor wastewater disposal. Sometimes, these waterborne diseases result in increased preventable mortality rates. Reusing water also helps to save energy. Some conventional systems of treating wastewater are expensive and designed to throw water away instead of reusing it. This does not help with issues such as water scarcity and distribution difficulties. Solutions to cleaning wastewater do not need to be “high-tech.” In fact, some of the best solutions are those that mimic nature’s way of purifying water. Alternative solutions include incorporating lakes and marshes, designing soil filters. Wetlands help clean water through the roots of the plants and the soil itself.
