Mission Statement

The University Channel puts video in the service of academia and creates a space for full-length presentations in the public arena. By broadcasting rich intellectual content over TV and the Web, UC is a virtual forum in which participating academics can debate ideas, present research, and -- where technical capacity allows -- produce original academic programming.

Unlike most existing video outlets, the University Channel does not seek to imitate commercial news or public affairs programming. Instead it breaks new ground in bypassing the limited editorial criteria of commercial broadcasting and establishing a video agenda that is under the control of academics. Because it is neither constrained by time nor dependent upon commercial feedback, UC's video content can be broad and flexible enough to cover the full gamut of academic investigation.

While it has unlimited potential, the University Channel begins with a focus on public and international affairs, because this is an area which lends itself most naturally to a many-sided discussion. Perhaps of greatest advantage to universities who seek to expand their dialog with overseas institutions and international affairs, UC can "go global" and become a truly international forum.

UC aims to become, literally, a "channel" for important thought, to be heard in its entirety. Television has become so much a part of the fabric of our world that it should become more than an academic interest. It should be an academic tool.
