What's different about the Princeton University Library web browsers?

You may have noticed the LibX Toolbar upgrade to the Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers on computers in the library. If you haven't seen it or tried it out, I highly recommend it. Adapted for Princeton University Libraries by Steve Adams, Biological and Life Sciences Librarian, this browser plug-in really will help "streamline the research process."

This toolbar is more than just another search box in your browser. It allows you to:

- Easily navigate Princeton University Library online resources with a handy toolbar dropdown menu on the left.
- Perform advanced in-browser searching of a variety of databases, including: PUL Main Catalog, EBSCO, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar and many more. A drop-down menu allows you to easily switch between databases without having to navigate to separate websites.
-	Highlight text within the browser window to drag and drop it into the search bar, directly onto a selected database, or onto the Google Scholar button.
-	Search for highlighted text in select databases with a right click.
-	ISBNs, ISSNs, PubMed Ids, and DOIs in the body of a page become links to check the Main PUL Catalog for holdings.
-	Easily check PUL holdings of books you find at your favorite online retailer.

For more detailed information about how to use this great new tool, visit Steve Adam's LibX Toolbar Libguide at: http://libguides.princeton.edu/content.php?pid=6769&sid=42420

ACM, "the world's largest educational and scientific computing society," recently added a new search technology to its digital library. This new technology allows users to refine search results by keyword, people, publications, or conferences by selecting from links along the left side of the search results. Additionally, users can discover related journals, magazines, interest groups, or meetings by clicking the tabs along the top of search results. To learn more about this new release, you can read the press release or the information page. And for those interested in the database technology itself, you can begin your research about the Endeca Information Access Platform here.

Engineering Village has also made some small changes to their online resources by updating the "Ask an Expert" page to facilitate finding the best expert and increasing the "Expert Search" character limit to 8,000.

Techstreet launches BuildingBlocks utility for industry standards - 11 Dec 2008

The Scientific business of Thomson Reuters has announced that Techstreet (about), a source for online access to industry codes and standards, has launched a new utility called Techstreet Subscriptions BuildingBlocks. The feature allows engineers to pre-purchase documents for the first time from publishers such as the American Society for Testing and Materials, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Petroleum Institute, British Standards Institution and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

BuildingBlocks lets Techstreet subscription customers buy standards in advance, in increments of 25, 50, 75 or 100 documents from selected publishers without naming specific titles. Users can immediately download required codes or standards on demand once their BuildingBlocks account is activated.

Techstreet Subscriptions is a Thomson Reuters web-based workflow tool that enables access to a controlled set of industry standards in electronic format. The Web 2.0 interface is projected to be fast and intuitive, with an advanced search and browse functionality, favourites lists, automatic updates, e-mail alerts, real-time usage reports, an announcement board and other administrative features.

· Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

· Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships (GREF).

SURE appointments are competitive, require U.S. Citizenship, and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (4.0 system). In addition, GREF requires applicants to have successfully completed at least one year of graduate school.

      Incorporating Standards Into Curricula

"In pursuit of its commitment to implementation of the United States Standards Strategy (USSS), ANSI is developing a pilot University Outreach program that will introduce globally-recognized and adopted standards into the classroom. ANSI will collaborate with faculty from a select group of universities to incorporate information about standards and conformity assessment, as well as knowledge of the appropriate standards, into their unique curricula. The program will be open to all disciplines.

Participants in the pilot program will have unfettered access to members of the U.S. standardization community who will be available to provide case studies, model tutorials, and other educational resources that can be used by professors in the classroom."

"ANSI will continue to provide free access for faculty and students in the pilot to any defined group of standards currently available in the collections of the ISO and IEC.
As the U.S. Member Body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ANSI has been authorized to provide, upon request, complimentary access for students and faculty to selected standards currently available in the ISO collection. If needed, certain standards from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) may also be made available.

These collections are comprised of nearly 20,000 standards, which can be made available to faculty and students in all disciplines in institutions of higher learning throughout the United States."

"Safari Books Online introduces Apple mobile integration with Safari Bookbag - 30 Oct 2008

Safari Books Online, a US-based e-reference joint venture between publishers O'Reilly Media, Inc. and Pearson Technology Group, has announced Safari Bookbag, allowing the download of chapter and full book PDFs to the iPhone and iPod touch. Safari Bookbag can be installed via the Apple App Store for no additional cost. Safari Books Online claims to be the first online publisher to open their entire library to iPhone and iPod touch users.

Safari Books Online chose to integrate with Apple devices as its first mobile platforms after conducting a survey of its users. Among the respondents, 50 percent indicated the iPhone or iPod touch was the mobile device they used. The company plans to continue rapid expansion of its mobile strategy with other devices and readers in the months to come.

Bookbag users can synch their Apple devices with the 'My Downloads' section of their Safari Books Online accounts, which houses PDF versions of books that have been downloaded. To access titles on the iPhone or iPod touch, users can select the chapter of the book they want to download by simply tapping on the title of the book. With the Bookbag application, any iPod touch or iPhone with Internet access (Edge, Wi-Fi, 3G) can automatically transfer chapters of books from the Safari library. Once the books are downloaded, the PDFs can be read and accessed at any time, even without an Internet connection."
