blender: 3-D modeling and animation software weekend workshop

Part 1: Saturday, November 9 – Introduction to blender: Interface Overview & Object Modeling
Part 2: Sunday, November 10 – Rendering & Animation

Time: 1:00pm – 4:30pm (both days)
Location: New Media Center, Lewis Library Building, 1st Floor

blender is a free and open-source, cross-platform (Windows/Mac/Linux), 3D computer graphics software used in art and animation, visual effects, 3D modeling, video games, and forensic reconstruction. This weekend intensive will be a hands-on opportunity to learn about this robust software. No previous animation or 3D modeling software experience is required.

Tech Spotlight: MR Daniel on Digital Audio Production in the NMC

In an ETC Spotlight, MR Daniel gave an overview of the basics of audio recording and equipment setup, with a focus on podcasting and field interviews. MR covered the introductory basics of digital audio recording in five parts: (1) Sound + Sampling Rates, (2) NMC Audio Booth + Audio Software, (3) Microphone Selection, (4) the Zoom H4N (portable recorders), (5) Interview and Recording Prep.

About the presenter

MR Daniel is a doctoral candidate in the music composition program at Princeton, and a student consultant at the New Media Center. She was previously Carnegie Mellon Visiting Professor in African American and Film Studies at Emory University.

We recently had a client who had several .MTS files on an SDHC card that he wanted to convert to the .MP4 format and make available via his Blackboard course site.  Final Cut Pro can read these files as can the freeware VLC Media Player and MPEG Streamclip.  However neither VLC nor Mpeg could actually convert the files (they claim it, but we’ve tested it).
