Moss, the director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab will give the opening talk in this year's "Leadership in a Technological World" lecture series at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the Friend Center Convocation Room.
Moss, a professor of the practice of media arts and sciences at MIT, will speak on "Inventing a Better Future." The event, which is followed by a reception, is free and open to the public.
After earning his B.S.E. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton in 1971, Moss earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT. A 25-year veteran of the software and computer industries, he has spent his career bringing innovative business technologies to market.
Moss first worked for IBM and later held executive management positions at Apollo Computer Inc. and Lotus Development Corp. He subsequently served as chief executive officer and chairman of Tivoli Systems Inc., a pioneer in the distributed systems management field, which he took public in 1995 and merged with IBM in 1996. Moss also is the co-founder of several other companies.
In the last five years, Moss has focused on making a broader contribution by using technology to address pressing social issues such as health care and to improve quality of life for people worldwide. He was appointed director of MIT's Media Lab in 2006.
A Princeton trustee and a member of the School of Engineering and Applied Science Leadership Council, Moss received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and was named one of Forbes Magazine's "Leaders for Tomorrow."
