WorldCat, world’s largest book catalog, now lists JSTOR articles!

"JSTOR now indexed in WorldCat.org – 18 Jan 2010

Authenticated scholars and researchers with online access to full-text content in JSTOR can now locate and connect to articles through WorldCat.org. JSTOR is a preservation archive and research platform for the academic community.

Over 4.5 million JSTOR article-level records from more than 1,000 journals, selected monographs, and other scholarly content are now indexed in WorldCat.org, the Web destination for discovery of materials in libraries worldwide. JSTOR records are delivered in WorldCat.org search results. Scholars and researchers using WorldCat.org can now identify content in JSTOR and connect to the full-text using the authorisation provided by their library.

WorldCat.org is a Web destination with search and social networking features that allow information seekers to discover, localise, and personalise content from local collections and those of more than 10,000 WorldCat libraries worldwide. WorldCat.org indexing of JSTOR metadata helps researchers easily identify resources in the collection alongside other materials relevant to their work. An authorization is required for access to full-text materials in JSTOR.

WorldCat claims to be the world’s largest database of bibliographic information built continuously by libraries around the world since 1971. Each record in the WorldCat database contains a bibliographic description of a single item or work and a list of institutions that hold the item. The institutions share these records, using them to create local catalogs, arrange interlibrary loans and conduct reference work. There are now more than 165 million records in WorldCat spanning five millennia of recorded knowledge. Like the knowledge it describes, WorldCat grows steadily. Every second, OCLC and its member libraries add seven records to WorldCat."

American Institute of Physics to secure all journals in dark archive

Melville, NY, June 12, 2009 – "The American Institute of Physics (AIP) announced today that online versions of all its journals will soon reside in the dark archive, CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), a joint venture by libraries and publishers committed to ensuring long-term access to scholarly publications in digital format. CLOCKSS will make AIP content freely available in the event that AIP is no longer able to provide access."

"CLOCKSS creates a secure, multi-site archive of web-published content that can be tapped into to provide ongoing access to researchers worldwide, free of charge."

"The American Institute of Physics is a federation of 10 physical science societies representing more than 135,000 scientists, engineers, and educators and is one of the world’s largest publishers of scientific information in physics. Offering full-solution publishing services for physics scientific societies and for similar organizations in science and engineering, AIP pursues innovation in electronic publishing of scholarly journals. AIP publishes its own

12 journals (many of which have the highest impact factors in their category); two magazines, including its flagship publication Physics Today; and the AIP Conference Proceedings. Its online publishing platform Scitation hosts nearly two million articles from more than 185 scholarly journals, and other publications of 28 learned society publishers."

Rice Database, formerly Rice Bibliography

The International Rice Research Institute’s Library is responsible for maintaining the Rice Bibliography. Whereas the library catalogue contains a large collection of books and journals of interest to scientists researching rice or rice-related topics, the Rice Bibliography is a comprehensive bibliography of all books and articles directly pertaining to rice. It endeavours to include all articles and books relating to rice in the world, and is the world’s largest and most complete source of scientific information about rice with almost 8,000 new references added each year. All articles pertaining to rice are sought out for the Rice Bibliography and IRRI Library acquires copies of the article whether or not it holds the particular serial in its collection.Over the years the Rice Bibliography has been mounted on a total of four software packages. The version on the screen before you contains references from 1970 onwards. Older references, a few going back to the mid-18th century, are available for searching at IRRI Library.

40 millionth chemical substance — CAS

US CAS registers 40 millionth substance 04 Dec 2008

Chemical database provider Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) has announced that CAS Registry now includes 40 million organic and inorganic substances. The CAS Registry is one the most comprehensive collections of chemical substances and the CAS Registry Number is the recognised global standard for chemical substance identification. More than 100 million CAS Registry Numbers have been assigned to organic and inorganic substances and biosequences.

The 40 millionth substance was identified by CAS scientists in a journal article published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition. The article describes a novel method for the synthesis of polycyclic substances with ‘a central seven-membered carbocycle’, including the 40 millionth substance.

A division of the American Chemical Society, CAS provides the world’s largest and most current collection of chemical and related scientific information, including the authoritative database of chemical substances, the CAS REGISTRY. CAS combines these databases with advanced search and analysis technologies to deliver complete, cross-linked and effective digital information environment for scientific research and discovery, including such products as SciFinder, STN, STN Express and STN AnaVistTM, among others.

Scopus adds pre-print research abstracts from publishers

"Netherland Scopus adds pre-print research abstracts from publishers29 Jul 2008

Abstracting and indexing database Scopus, part of STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced that it has added ‘Articles-in-Press’ (AiP), abstracts of accepted research papers published prior to being printed, from journals produced by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers, and Nature Publishing Group (NPG). Later this year, AiPs from BioMed Central and IEEE will also be available. Scopus previously offered access to AiPs from Elsevier and Springer that included 2500 titles. This number will now rise to about 3000.

Scopus AiP abstracts are citable and precede the final published, printed version by up-to-four months, significantly accelerating the knowledge discovery process for researchers. Researchers will gain access to the full-text by linking from Scopus to the publishers’ digital library. This early access provides greater connectivity to the current state of research in a range of fields, as well as a more timely method for evaluating the output of authors and institutions.

Since AiPs are posted online either as an accepted manuscript or online publication (according to each publisher’s release policy), they may still be subject to changes and/or corrections by the author or publisher. Scopus clearly labels AiPs as such so researchers are aware that an updated abstract will be made available once the papers are in print."

DOE Data Explorer — online scientific research data portal

" US Department of Energy launches open data repository 04 Jul 2008

The US Department of Energy has launched the DOE Data Explorer (DDE), a tool to find scientific research data generated in the course of DOE-sponsored research in various science disciplines. The data that can be found include computer simulations, numeric data files, figures and plots, interactive maps, multimedia and scientific images.

The DOE Data Explorer includes a database of citations prepared by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) based on the information found at data-hosting web sites. It is intended to be particularly useful to students, the public, and to researchers who are new to a field or looking for experimental or observational data outside their normal field of expertise.

One can browse or search the database, then link to a data collection where it resides. Users will often find specialised search interfaces and software toolkits developed by the data owners. These allow the users to search deeper into the data files and help them understand, analyse and use the data within the context of their own research interests.

The publicly available data collections support DOE research results that are well documented in journal articles, conference literature and technical reports. Key DOE databases of R&D information are searchable through the Science Accelerator. The DOE Data Explorer will include enhanced search capabilities across specialised web sites as it continues to grow."
