A couple of nights ago, I went over to Catherine’s house for dinner and to watch a movie (Bourne Ultimatum actually). Her roommates were also around and are all pretty great, but I’ve only seen them in “going out” mode and, well, acting like the Australians you see scattered throughout the city. But during dinner, we all had a very interesting and serious conversation about NGOs’ roles in the city, the Cambodian government’s responsibility, employment opportunities for Cambodians, and the effects of corruption. It was weird and great to have the conversation, as it was the first really in depth one I’ve had spontaneously. These topics have come up before with others, but something about this conversation just made it very engaging, and it was great to realize that even the people you would least expect to be are obviously here for a deep reason and because they really care about NGO work or the people here or trying to improve things.
Some of them have been here for up to a year already, and actually, afterwards, we got talking about how many people we could pile on a moto and ended up sharing all of our best sightings throughout the city. I figured I’d recount them since they were pretty amusing. So without further adieu, The Best of Moto Sightings from the six of us were seeing a motorbike with…
- Eight people (including 4 kids fanned out on the driver’s lap) riding on it
- Two people holding a pane of glass together
- Two people holding the back bumper of a Land Cruiser
- Three people and a mini-fridge and my personal favorite…
- Two people carrying another moto
