I’m one of the admins of the PU Blog Service.

In the comments or a post, try typing some Chinese characters, and I will try to see why Movable Type is scrambling them.

Also, if you could cut and paste those same characters into an e-mail and send that to me (mdmuzzie@princeton.edu) so I can see which characters are getting scrambled.

Usually, MT does pretty well with foreign characters because it uses Unicode. We may need to experiment with other encodings beside utf-8.

OK, web guru, here goes. The stuff that changed when I saved last night was Niu Gan Jun 牛肝菌 and Songrong 松茸, as well as apomixis 无融合生殖．　Let’s see how it works out this time…

Huh, it is working fine in the preview, but that was true last night too. Here goes the post.

OK so now there is no problem. I am at work, as opposed to my home connection, but I don’t know why that would make a difference. Other than that, nothing has changed. I’m going to try to re-save my post with the Chinese and see if it is working now.

Nope it still changes some of the characters when I post. I’m emailing what it should say, and I’ll leave the incorrect stuff up in the previous post.

So far I have narrowed down that the problem never seems to occur in comments, even when you edit the comments through the admin interface.

It only happens in posts. The entry editing box scrambles the text, and that shows up in posts in the main page and the individual archive page. I suspect this is happening when the posts are saved to the database.

I have a completely independent installation of Movable Type where this problem does not occur at all. I need to compare both to see where the problem is. This may take me a few days to figure out. 对不起.

It’s always fun to have a unique and challenging problem! Oh joy oh joy. I’ll see if I can make any progress over here on my end. Again, thanks for your help.
