Catching Up

After a long, extended period of not writing I have tons to say and no time to say it in. So here are some pictures from Thailand. Yes, after coming back from vacation I am headed out again on a work trip. One day down time. Sometimes I wonder why I do this to myself .... ANYWAYS ...

The River Kwai (yup, the same one from the movie which I have, I'm afraid to admit, never seen):

Kids in a waterfall:

Head of a Buddha covered by roots. It probably has a more sophisticated name than that but I don't know it:

Another pretty ruined temple:

And one last pretty standing temple:

Ok, that's all for now. Maybe I'll be better at updating when I get back from the districts.

Pictures of the Home

This is my house in Bedau Lecidere. I'm not even sure how to spell it -- much less what address it is. But you can find it on the dirt road right next to the pigs, if that helps:

This is the dirt road. That structure down at the end of the road is a cock fighting ring. Yes, that's right -- I live in the cock fighting district:

That's about it. More tomorrow with pictures from my trips to Ermera and Maliana.

Atambua Pics

I have no time, because I'm headed out of town again - but I will write stories about a little town called Atambua sometime later this lifetime. Here are some pics for now.

1) A church.

2) A boy fanning a fire. We call it 'burning the hills'. People burn everything around here.
IMG_0199.JPG

3)An interesting wall painting. And people sitting by it with chickens.
IMG_0187.JPG

4) Street art - on the street. It reads: 'Scream Eros'. Don't ask me why that's funny, but it just is.

Ok -- long awaited photo from Baucau.

Another photo from Dili -- again another boat. And a homeless man that I see every day on my way to work.

Pics!

Unfortunately in my haste to try and feel at home in my new . . . well . . . home, I have stopped carrying around my camera. Thus, I only have limited pictures to post online for people to see. But here are a few I took earlier and never got around to doing anything with them:

kids on beach.jpg
--Kids on Dili Beach: Saw me with a camera and went nuts wanting to see photos. I didn't speak much Tetun then, but I got a couple printed and have tried to find the family ever since. No such luck --

kids on post.jpg
--Kids on a post outside a malae club. They wandered around up there, in and out of a barbed wire fence! Scared me to death. So glad I'm not a mom.--

meat.jpg
--A meat market in Lospaolos. Yes, that is the head of an oxen. Mmm.--

Pics from the Districts

I'm back from the Districts. For those of you who don't know what 'the districts' refers to, it's the part of Timor that's not Dili. And I'm back. This basically means that in the past two days I have traversed a large part of this country â€" from seeing the rice fields to cows and goats all over the road everywhere to the most stupendous mountains â€" I am now convinced that this country is a jewel lost in the myriad complexities of international war and strife. I don't have much time to write because I want to go do fun things, but I might record my experiences later. Or at least I hope I will, but for now I'll just post a few of the amazing pictures I took.

I'm Leaving On A Jet Plane

Yeah, last entry from the states. Guess I'm more freaked that I'm going to forget to pack something than anything else. At the same time I'm trying to avoid the whole "what's the worst that could happen" though path - because right now my mind has come up with some seriously messed up possibilities.

In other news, I finally have my digital camera and can upload some serious and artsy photos. I mean seriously, worhsip my photo skills.
