Gareth, River, and I just had dinner (Richard left for Yunxian this afternoon). I'm sorry I didn't have my camera or else you'd have a really odd video to watch. We had the usual potatoes, boiled cabbage, and lots of rice. One of the cooks brought out a tasty looking meat dish. River made the mistake of asking her, "What is this?" I was expecting her to say, "Beef." But that'd be too expected, this is rural China after all.
"Pig heart."
So we were having pig heart for dinner. River had the first bite, and Gareth and I followed a few seconds after. It was surprisingly tasty. It reminded me a lot of a nice meaty slice of beef (a rare treat here, where most things are served with bones). I did my best to avoid the super chewy outer layer. This was certainly unexpected.
But that couldn't possibly be it. And it isn't.
A few minutes later, while chewing on some tasty pig heart, we heard some sweet techno jams blasting from the kitchen. It was a haunting tune from high school - "Dragostea Din Tei" aka Numa Numa.
So there I was, listening to Romanian techno while eating pig heart in rural China. Not a sentence I ever thought I'd type.
