Happening
According to Xinhua (and scant information in English from the BBC), Han Wushun, a 42-year-old Chinese man from Sichuan Province, detonated a bomb in an Urumqi office building around 2 pm today, killing himself and injuring two others. Most of us are just receiving the news now so I will post more if the local police releases more details, which they might not. All of the British and American news sources follow up on these facts with background information about Uyghur unrest-- which is entirely unconnected to the above incident. To reiterate, the man was Han Chinese, and his motives, economically driven.
Around 1 pm, the perpetrator carried explosives in a black cloth bag into the first floor of Xinjiang Beixin Road and Bridge Construction Co., Ltd, near Hetan Road, Urumqi, claiming that the company owed him about 4500 yuan (660 USD) for services rendered. He previously had argued and lost in court over this compensation. He threatened to detonate the bomb if the company would not pay him. At the time, three people were in the office; one left to evacuate other personnel in the building while the other two stayed behind to deal with the escalating situation. The perpetrator died when detonating the bomb. Although the two office workers were hurt in the explosion, their injuries were not life-threatening.
