Feminist Activism on the Internet

For those looking for ways to incite change from the comfort of your own dorm room, look no further. The ‘Net, unsurprisingly, has morphed into a bonified activist tool. From using chatrooms to discuss ideologies, to message boards to implement plans, or email clients like Emma to incur positive change, the Internet can help you — if you know how to use it correctly.

Check out the 3rd WWWave’s site for some safety tips and creative ways you can use the ‘Net. Surf smart.

Write a Feminist Essay!

Feminists for Free Expression (FFE) is “a group of diverse feminists working to preserve the individual’s right to see, hear and produce materials of her choice without the intervention of the state “for her own good.”

They have an open call for essays, and the topic is particularly appropriate for our work with The Vagina Monologues:

We invite you to tell us about a specific instance in which the First Amendment protected or inspired you. We also want to know if your First Amendment rights were denied you. Or simply tell us why you feel the First Amendment is important to you. Ask your friends to do the same. We will collect your responses and post them here. Prizes will be given to writers whose essays will be selected at random.

There’s also a few examples of already published essays on the website. Look out for an essay by Erin Judge, who says, “Comedians, writers, and other contributors to the culture deliberately violate taboos and often use shocking language in order to push the boundaries of society. It’s part of how we evolve as a culture.”

Have fun exploring, and I encourage you to enter the essay contest.

E-Cards: Celebrating the End of Finals Week!

For those students here at Princeton University — or even those at other universities plagued by the same condition — I’d like to give a warm congratulations! Whether you’re in the middle of finals or just finished (like many Princeton students!), keep up the good work. Your toils will pay off, grasshopper.

We need to support each other during stressful times. Our bodies are telling us to slow down (oh, so that’s what that cold means?!) and finally relax. Why not treat your friends to a V-Day E-Card? 94% of the money you donate will go to charities to stop violence against women. Ultimately, this is why we present The Vagina Monologues: to save women’s lives.

If you’re a poor college student like most of us, don’t fret. You can still help. How about donating, say, three hours of your time on a Sunday to help a women’s shelter? V-day Princeton University 2007’s beneficiary is Womanspace. So hop on over and help out!

V-Day Events Near Princeton University

As Vagina Warriors, it’s important for us to know how to network with our peers who are aligned in the cause to end violence against women. V-Day makes it remarkably easy to discern the who-abouts and where-abouts of other Vagina Warriors. If you’re interested in looking for an event in your area, feel free to use V-Day’s interactive form.

For V-Day Princeton University 2007, our New Jersey neighbors will be…

V-Day Rutgers University, Camden Campus 13 February 2007 - 6 PM V-Day Rider University 5 March 2007 - 7 PM 6 March 2007 - 7 PM 7 March 2007 - 7 PM V-Day Livingston 6 March 2007 - 7 PM V-Day Drew Theological School 22 February 2007 - 6:30 PM 23 February 2007 - 6:30 PM 24 February 2007 - 6:30 PM V-Day Ridgewood 16 February 2007 - 8 PM V-Day Summit 16 February 2007 - 7:30 PM 17 February 2007 - 7:30 PM V-Day William Paterson University 6 March 2007 - 12:30 PM 6 March 2007 - 7:30 PM 7 March 2007 - 7:30 PM

I hope that some of our members will make it to neighboring V-Days. The events listed here are merely those whose dates have been finalized; there’s at least a dozen more, just in New Jersey! And V-Mail announces that it’s “not too late” to organize a V-Day. So get out and get going!

Events Coordinator: Residential Colleges

As coordinator pertaining to the residential colleges, you’d have quite the responsibility in organizing campus life in relation to The Vagina Monologues. Currently, ideas for possible events are as follows.

-An event with all-girl acapella groups -Teaming up with the Organization of Women Leaders - Gender Studies Program - RCAs and possibly eating clubs will get to “order in” 1 SHARE member plus 1 cast member to do discussions of the show

Interested? Email Jean M. Beebe, the director.

Events Coordinator: Eating Clubs

For this position, you’d work with an eating club to get a party that has a theme tied to the performance and decreasing violence against women. Ideally, this would be one of the more socially conservative clubs. Feel free to brainstorm strategies and other ideas.

Up to the task? Email Jean M. Beebe, the director.

Events Coordinator: Frist Campus Center

For this position, you’d have several projects to sift through. So far, ideas are…

-Tabling in Frist. Cast members will rotate shifts while other actresses are in rehearsals. The tables will have pink table cloths, flowers, lip balms, and chocolate vaginas (either homemade or from a company). -Team up with the Women’s Center, SHARE, LGBT Center - Art Night in Frist = Make Valentines - Variation on the old kissing booth: argue with a feminist for $.50 -CONCERT! (Surprise!)

Sound intriguing? Email Jean M. Beebe, the director.

Volunteer Coordinator

As volunteer coordinator, you’d have to have high energy for this one! You’d organize the tasks appropriate for volunteers: menial duties that really help us out. You’d organize volunteer events for V-Week and get non-cast members involved!

Experience working with non-profits a plus.

Does this pique your interest? Contact Jean M. Beebe, the director.

January 15, 2007

Treasurer

As Treasurer, you’d handle our money! We’re officially sponsored by the student group Wym’on Stage. You’d work with Katrina Rogachevsky (last year’s director and president of the club) on the particulars of how much money we should donate to our beneficiary, Womanspace, and how much we should keep as a nest egg.

Are you an Econ major who wants to do some community service work? Sign on up! Contact the director, Jean M. Beebe.
