JAMES AN
As a freshman at Princeton University enrolled in Princeton’s Impressionism and Modern Art writing seminar, James became interested in Picasso’s portrayal of musical instruments because of his interest in music and exposure, though limited, to abstract art. James began classical piano training from the age of eight and continues to enjoy playing classical, jazz, and contemporary pieces. While naming Beethoven and Rachmaninoff as his favorite composers, James was introduced to De Séverac’s music through this research project and agrees that the French composer is unfairly underappreciated (see De Séverac’s Influence).

Before this writing seminar, James’s exposure to abstract art came through the works of his grandmother, Hi Yeon Lim. Her paintings were selected for the Korean Women Artists’ Exhibit at the Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Service in New York City. James’s house serves as a permanent gallery of her bold and colorful works, strongly influenced by her former residence in the tropics.
Graduating as a member of Yorktown High School’s class of 2004, James calls home the dull New York suburb, Yorktown Heights. He was a member of his school’s underachieving varsity swimming and tennis teams and harbors a competitiveness that currently shows itself during pickup basketball games at Dillon gymnasium’s courts. Pictured above with his awesome sister, James also has two neglected fish – Larry and Bob.
