Source of News

In the past two years my main source of news moved from print media to almost solely sources on the internet. For the most part I read website versions of print media such as the New York Times, Washington Post, and my hometown daily: the Oregonian. I enjoy the ability to look at news that covers a larger time frame then one day in order to learn more about a topic or see the evolution of a story.

Of course, it also makes it easier to read up on topics outside my normal vein of interest and in my case, receive more information then I normally would consume in simply going through a newspaper. I have been slow on picking up more alternative forms of news sources on the web. I find the selectivity of most blogs frustrating and have yet to find many that really fit my own personal tastes. As a link clicking addict, I rely heavily on back sources and in-depth commentary or news that one can find in the newspaper websites.
My television news intake dropped considerably when I came to college and I found myself no longer eating in front of the tv and with other commitments. Growing up I watched Peter Jennings daily but without cable I never got into the 24/7 news channels. I believe this brought about my heavy reliance on the internet. In my travels, I was introduced to bbc and cnn international 24/7 news broadcasts which I enjoy and will often watch those for an hour or so at a time because of their more engaging format. There are more specials and in-depth pieces or programs to entertain a viewer that does not use the channel solely as a means for updates at any time.
One reason I read the news and attempt to find analysis heavy reports is to have a real/current world understanding of class room material. I repeatedly would scan websites for articles that somehow showed campaign phenomenon seen in experiments during my campaign and election class. Most of that news also fits into the category is the news that is discussed with friends or at dinner conversations. A large chunk of my ‘news’ is general interest information that has little immediate practical use such as the travel or arts section of the New York Times.
