Kyle Burkhardt is the ERA Manager in the Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA) at Princeton University. She is a software tester, documentation writer, and trainer for two software applications used by the University for Sponsored Research:  Coeus for proposal tracking and PS Grants for award/subaward tracking. Kyle also gives demos on how to use Pivot to find funding opportunities, and manages the University Research Board (URB) proposal reader process.

Willow Dressel and Carla Zimowsk will be “tag-teaming” this co-presentation on data matters central to all researchers. File Management: Whether gathered directly from archives or downloaded from online sources, digital research material can often wind up in a disorganized mess on your hard drive or in the “cloud,” impossible to easily locate again.  An old archivists saying claims “You don’t own it if you can’t find it!” Carla Zimowsk will focus on strategies and tools for keeping your digital research materials organized and discoverable. Data Management: More and more digital data are being used and created in the course of research, yet often little thought is given to managing this data for collaboration, future use, or preservation. Planning ahead for data management is the best way to address these needs. Willow Dressel will discuss creating data management plans and the importance of documenting your data.

Do you find yourself going back and forth between the classroom whiteboard/blackboard and your PowerPoint to write notes or diagram a problem? Can you and your students see that board adequately in the darkened room? When you lower the projection screen to show your class presentation, does it obscure the only place to write? Did you ever wish you had a blank page mid-lecture so you could diagram or sketch an idea that’s just occurred to you? At the end of your talk, does everyone whip out their cell phones to take a picture of the notes you’ve written on the board?

Interactive whiteboards can help combine digital presentations and manual annotations on a single screen by using digital ink for freehand notes and annotations. The annotations can then typically be saved and shared with an audience, or circulated for collaborative work. This talk will provide an overview of various hardware, software, and mobile solutions to make on-screen annotations spontaneous and easy.

Janet Temos is the Director of the Educational Technologies Center at Princeton. She is a member of the Princeton class of 1982, and received her PhD at Princeton in 2001. The ETC helps faculty use technology in teaching and research, and includes Training and Outreach as well as the New Media Center (NMC). We also offer consulting, training and outreach in educational technologies.

GradeGuru: A Place Where Students Share Their Notes

garde_guru_logo.pngGradeGuru is a website where students can upload notes that they created to share with other students. Students are encouraged to share notes by a promise that they will be paid (via Paypay or other forms)  for the materials they upload to GradeGuru. Besides the point that you can get paid, I think it’s a great site where students share what helped them in a class. The one thing I am fuzzy on is once it’s uploaded, does GradeGuru own the copyright to your work ( I would read the TOS before uploading)? The site is also using TurnItIn to detect plagiarism. I think it’s a great concept and a great resource for students to find supplemental notes to help them through a course. There are many subjects posted on the site.
