Our project explores Surrealist installations. We hope to draw on Surrealist exhibits to structure and inform our own exhibit. In light of this, we read about the exhibitions themselves, and then read various works of scholarship that helped us better understand the political and aesthetic qualities of these exhibitions. Though there were more exhibits than we will cover here, we focused on L’Exposition Anticoloniale (1931), L’Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme (1938), the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and the two American exhibitions of 1942.
