Introduction
Through investigating the BP Oil Spill in order to form an argument in regards to media there was a lot I found in my research that although important and interesting did not all relate to my actual paper as a result this website explores some of the aspects of both of the disasters that proved interesting beyond just the information gained from my research paper.
Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
Statistics: 1
- The amount of oil spilled was equal to 125 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
- As many as 2,800 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 900 bald eagles and 250,000 seabirds died in the days after the disaster.
- The spill caused over $300 million of economic harm to more than 32 thousand people whose livelihoods depended on commercial fishing.
- 1,300 miles of coastline were hit by the oil spill.
- The cleanup required about 10,000 workers, 1,000 boats and roughly 100 airplanes and helicopters.
BP Oil Spill
- 4.9 million barrels of oil (205.8 million gallons) in total leaked from the Deepwater Horizon well.
- That is about half the amount of crude oil the U.S. imports per day.
- 665 Miles of coastline contaminated were by oil.
- 397.7 million dollars worth of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.
- The estimated cost of the oil spill to the Gulf Coast tourist industry was $23 billion, which employs upwards of 400,000 people and generates $34 billion of revenue each year.
