In addition to his many scholarly contributions and long service to Princeton as a colleague and mentor, Professor Ryder was exceptionally generous in giving his time and wisdom to journalists and other amateur demographers. To cite an example close to my heart, he was enormously helpful to me as I was writing my 1980 book, “Great Expectations: America and the Baby-Boom Generation,” and much of whatever merit that book has owes to his clear advice. I will be forever grateful.
