Arno Mayer

Arno Mayer, the Dayton-Stockton Professor of History, Emeritus, and an esteemed historian of modern Europe and diplomacy, died in a senior residence in Princeton, N.J. on Dec. 18, 2023. He was 97.

    For my Masters in Social Work thesis, “The Social Worker’s Guide to Peace,” I used Arno’s scholarship in my research. I greatly regret not meeting him. He served our country in the war against fascism and also was a loyal critic of its foreign policy. He was able to integrate the European history of the Cold War with the postwar period of American foreign policy, something that some revisionist historians have failed to do.
    Even though I did not personally meet him, I am grateful for him touching my life by contributing to my historical research,
