Kate was my Private Secretary – essentially Chief of Staff – when I was Minister of State for Health in the UK government of John Major 1994-1997.

I appointed her as a freshly minted graduate in Mathematics – she coyly glossed over the fact that she gained a Double First – to head my Private Office as part of a ‘fast track’ entrance to the Civil Service. It was the best choice I have ever made. Smart, loyal, engaging, sound judgement …… that’s just a start. Unlike most of the current generation of UK politicians I enjoyed a fulfilling spell in office. That was largely down to Kate.

She remained a friend when I left government. I was thrilled to attend her wedding to Victor, and we maintained regular contact when she moved to the US. I was not surprised that she earned plaudits wherever she went. After all, I knew her.

She leaves an unfillable hole in the lives of her family and many friends. Rest in peace. Gerald Malone
