Greenhouse Gas Emissions have increased based on data from 32 global energy providers

US “Thomson Reuters releases greenhouse gas emissions data on Global Energy Providers – 21 May 2015

Thomson Reuters has released a new research Global 500 Greenhouse Gas Report: The Fossil Fuel Energy Sector, revealing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data from 32 global energy companies, a key subset of the world’s largest publically traded businesses. The report, written in collaboration with global sustainability consultancy BSD Consulting, is the second in a series of GHG reports designed to create transparency and enable sound management of global GHG emissions.

Building on the previous report, the new report includes data around consumers’ use of a company’s products, called Scope 3 data, to present a fuller view of the business’s overall contribution to GHG emissions. Among the data included in the report, 31 percent of GHG emitted globally on an annual basis comes from 32 global energy companies and the population’s use of their products.

From 2010 to 2013, GHG emissions from the 32 energy companies and use of their products increased by 1.3 percent, a sharp contrast to the 2014 United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report, which recommended a 4.2 percent reduction of GHG emissions over the same time period to keep global temperatures within manageable limits.

In addition to contributions from the Carbon Disclosure Project and the Climate Accountability Institute, self-reported GHG emissions data was gathered from energy sector businesses and combined with estimates pulled from Thomson Reuters ASSET4, a provider of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) data. ASSET4 gathers standardised, objective, quantitative and qualitative ESG data on more than 4,800 publicly listed companies.”

DataCite & Data Citation Index (Thomson Reuters)

The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters has announced a collaboration with DataCite, a global non-profit organization dedicated to enabling people to find, share, use, and cite data. The collaboration will promote the discovery of research data sets through the Data Citation Index, a single-point solution providing access to quality research data sets from multi-disciplinary repositories around the world.

This collaboration will connect the Data Citation Index to high quality research data from repositories worldwide that work with DataCite. This will ensure that the valuable content that has been made citable by DataCite is globally discoverable, properly attributed and reusable by other researchers. As part of the Web of Science – the premier scientific search and discovery platform and industry authority in science, social science, and arts & humanities citation indexes – inclusion within the Data Citation Index will also further DataCite’s mission of increasing acceptance of research data as citable contributions to the scholarly record.

Since creating the Data Citation Index, Thomson Reuters has worked closely with global industry leaders to expand the breadth of research discovery by capturing bibliographic records and cited references for digital research, as well as literature describing research which cites or uses the data, stewarding the accurate identification, attribution and measurement of this growing body of scholarship. The Data Citation Index allows users to gain a comprehensive view of the genesis of research projects and influence the future paths they may take, while minimizing the duplication of work and speeding the scientific research process to keep pace with the changing global research landscape. Through linked content and summary information, this data is displayed within the broader context of the scholarly research ecosystem, enabling users to gain perspective that otherwise would be lost if viewed in isolation.”

Hottest Scientific Researchers & Papers — 2011 (Web of Science)

US Thomson Reuters names Hottest Scientific Researchers and Papers of the year – 12 Apr 2012

“The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters has announced ‘The Hottest Research of 2011’, a ranking of the most influential scientific researchers and research papers of the year by Science Watch, its open Web resource for science metrics and analysis. Tracking researchers whose recent published papers recorded notably higher levels of citations during 2011, along with the most highly cited individual papers of the year, the annual report spotlights emerging trends in science and the innovators behind them.

This year’s group of 15 Hottest Researchers each contributed to at least 10 Hot Papers, covering key areas such as genetics, cardiology, epidemiology and cancer research. Eric S. Lander of The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard topped the list of most influential researchers for the second year straight, recording 14 Hot Papers in 2011. This was Lander’s eighth year on the list. He was followed by Salim Yusuf of McMaster University and Michael R. Stratton of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, both of whom recorded 13 Hot Papers in 2011. The most highly cited individual paper published in 2011, ‘Seven-Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe Observations: Cosmological Interpretations,’ by E. Komatsu, of The University of Texas at Austin, et al. received a total of 564 citations during the year.

The year’s Hottest Researchers were identified using citations that occurred during calendar year 2011 for papers published between 2009 and 2011. The list of Hottest Papers tracks total citations to non-review papers during calendar year 2011. To compile both lists, Science Watch draws on data and commentary from Thomson Reuters bibliometric experts and Essential Science Indicators, a unique compilation of science performance statistics and science trends data based on journal article publication counts and citation data from Web of Knowledge.”

Thomson Reuters predicts Nobel Laureates for 2010 – 22 Sep 2010

“Information services provider Thomson Reuters, US, has announced the 2010 Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates researchers likely to be in contention for Nobel honours. Thomson Reuters claims to be the only organisation to use quantitative data to make annual predictions of Nobel Prize winners.

Each year, Thomson Reuters uses data from its research solution, Web of Knowledge, to quantitatively determine the most influential researchers in the Nobel categories of Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, and Economics. Based on citations to their works, the company names these high-impact researchers as Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates and predicts them to be Nobel Prize winners, either this year or in the near future. Since 2002, 19 Citation Laureates have gone on to win Nobel Prizes.

The Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates typically rank among the top one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of researchers in their fields, based on citations of their published papers over the last two decades. This year, 15 of the 21 Citation Laureates hail from American universities. Researchers from France, Japan, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom also appear among the 2010 picks.
