July 16, 2010 — Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia, says a new report from the National Research Council. Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

IPCC Review Committee, chaired by Harold Shapiro, former Princeton Univ. President

InterAcademy Council Names IPCC Review Committee

Former Princeton University President Harold T. Shapiro will chair an InterAcademy Council (IAC) committee that has been asked by the United Nations to conduct an independent review of the procedures and processes of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Roseanne Diab of the Academy of Science of South Africa will serve as vice chair. The IAC is an organization of the world’s science academies, including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

CO2 Emissions Causing Ocean Acidification at Unprecedented Rate

“April 22, 2010 — Unless man-made carbon dioxide emissions are substantially curbed, or atmospheric carbon dioxide is controlled by some other means, the oceans will continue to become more acidic, says the summary of a congressionally requested study by the National Research Council. The long-term consequences are unknown, but a federal program under development is a positive move toward understanding and responding to the problem.”

Green Energy Portal from the DOE

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) has opened the Green Energy Portal. It offers to all — scientists, students and the public — quick access to research and development in the area of renewable energy. There are thousands of full-text documents.

"The DOE Green Energy portal is part of the DOE Open Government Plan, which furthers the Administration’s Open Government Initiative. DOE Green Energy contains both current and historical research, including bibliographic citations, technical reports and patent information on different types of renewable energy resources and energy conservation. Subject areas include but are not limited to solar, wind, bioenergy, hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal and wave power, and energy storage."

This is most likely a just a short cut, but I trust that most all of these documents and their indexing is available via NTIS, NTRL, Science.gov and/or the DOE’s Information Bridge.

Climate Change website from the European Union

Don’t overlook the European Union network of websites — a portal — as a resource for information on the environment. Here is the homepage for Climate Change. Documents can be found on International Climate Negotiations, EU Domestic Actions, and Studies, and links and archives are accessible.

Also note the EU Environment homepage and the Site Map.

NTRL — an expanded version of NTIS Government Reports Index

Besides NTIS, available via Engineering Village/Elsevier, Princeton University now has access to: NTRL (National Technical Reports Library)National Technical Information Service. Over 500,000 documents are available in full-text from departments such as Department of Energy, NASA, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

NTRS differs from NTIS in that it covers more years, mainly from 1960, but as far back as 1800. The database is updated daily and there is full text for about 25% of the reports.

NRC Report Examines Hidden Costs of Energy

"October 19, 2009 — A new report from the National Research Council examines "hidden" costs of energy production and use — such as the the health impacts of air pollution — that are not reflected in market prices of coal or oil. The quantifiable damages alone were an estimated $120 billion in the U.S. in 2005, a number that reflects primarily health damages caused by air pollution from electricity generation and motor vehicle transportation."
