I worked for Charlie Townsend for several years while I was an undergraduate. He was a great person to work for. And now that I am a department chair myself, I appreciate how capably he performed a difficult job. The Slavic department really felt like a family back then.

I studied with him at Indiana University in 1974. What a superb teacher and memorable scholar.
