This current issue features papers on Energy and the Environment. If you want any report listed in the NTIS database, it may be available to you full text on the NTRL National Technical Reports Library to which Princeton subscribes. (Otherwise, you may ask for a librarian’s help or request reports through Interlibrary Loan.)

GREENR enhanced by audio and video interviews

“Gale and TheGreenInterview.com partner to enhance content of GREENR – 17 May 2011

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, US, and TheGreenInterview.com, a Canadian subscription website offering information on environmental subjects, have announced an agreement to enhance the content of GREENR. GREENR is Gale’s electronic resource offering authoritative reference content in the area of sustainable development, the environment, energy and natural resources.

TheGreenInterview.com will be providing Gale with video interviews covering a range of issues connected to our planet, humans on Earth, damage to our ecosystem, alternative development ideas, sustainability and more. Transcripts and audio (MP3) files of the video content and biographies of the interviewees in each video segment will also be available. Additional Green Interview content will be added to GREENR in the future, as it is produced. The agreement also licenses to Gale two blogs from TheGreenInterview.com that discusses current and past environmental topics and developments.

TheGreenInterview.com, hosted by noted author, speaker and educator Silver Donald Cameron, provides an e-newsletter and video series that captures, in interview form, the ideas of the world’s most prominent advocates of sustainability and environmental protection. The shows are produced and directed by Chris Beckett, and released in association with Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Launched in April 2010, the goal of TheGreenInterview.com is to amass an unparalleled library of extended video and audio interviews with the world’s environmental leaders. NTRL — an expanded version of NTIS Government Reports Index

Besides NTIS, available via Engineering Village/Elsevier, Princeton University now has access to: NTRL (National Technical Reports Library)National Technical Information Service. Over 500,000 documents are available in full-text from departments such as Department of Energy, NASA, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

NTRS differs from NTIS in that it covers more years, mainly from 1960, but as far back as 1800. The database is updated daily and there is full text for about 25% of the reports.

Knovel adds titles in Sustainable Energy & Development and Earth Science

“Knovel has just wrapped up a very busy year and is looking forward to helping our customers achieve their goals for 2009. Our focus is to help make users more productive in their work— in the office, out in the field, around the world. Last year we enhanced Knovel to make it faster and more flexible. We upgraded the functionality of interactive tables and doubled the amount of technical content on our site. To be more specific, we added nearly 400 new handbooks, including over 170 in two new subject areas: Sustainable Energy & Development and Earth Science.”

While the term “biotechnology” covers a very broad area, this guide focuses on the most recent uses of biotechnology in its four major fields: 1. medicine (vaccine development, chemotherapy drugs, stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and pharmacogenomics); 2. agriculture (genetically modified organisms and cloning); 3. energy and environment (biofuel and waste management); and 4. the bioethical and legal implications of biotechnology.

This guide updates and replaces TB 84-7, and furnishes a review of the literature in the collections of the Library of Congress on the topic. Not intended as a comprehensive bibliography, this compilation is designed-as the name of the series implies-to put the reader “on target.”

“The Habitable Planet: A Systems Approach to Environmental Science

Phrases like “biodiversity climate” and “ecosystems” are becoming ubiquitous on evening television broadcasts, yet some may still be unfamiliar with these terms and concepts. Fortunately, there is “The Habitable Planet” website, which was designed by Annenberg Media for teachers and adult learners who wish to learn more about current events in environmental science. The content on the site is divided into thirteen areas, which include oceans, water resources, energy challenges, and agriculture. Within each section, visitors can make their way through separate sections within the online textbook, and also view content that includes interactive labs, graphics, video clips, and specialized glossaries. Returning to the site’s homepage, visitors will also note that they can view the content by type, which makes it a bit easier if they are looking for a specific video clip or visual feature.”
