The Great Irish Famine: Modern Perspectives on Yesterday’s Disaster

Human Rights Discourse: A Modern Concept 1

The following video provides a very cursive and schematic glance at the evolution of human rights over history.  Even in today’s world, the notion remains highly fragile and tenuous.  As a subjugated nation, stigmatized because of its perceived weakness and religious divergence from English Protestantism, human rights discourse was entirely foreign to 19th century Ireland.  While the video speaks of ‘natural rights’ expanding over Europe of the time, it fails to take into account the uniqueness of the Irish geopolitical situation.  Hence the importance of revisiting the Irish Potato Famine and applying human rights discourse to properly celebrate the humanities of its victims.
