The New Media Center offers a service that can turn your old teaching tools (35 mm slides, LPs, cassettes and tapes) into digital images, video and sound files. This service is provided free of charge to faculty members for course-related materials only (a course number and department account number will be needed). As the service is dependent upon the availablity of student workers at the NMC, there may be some times of the year when digitization takes longer. There is a limit on the amount of materials that can be requested in a single job, depending on staff availablity.
Contact Paula Brett at 258-6009 or plbrett@princeton.edu.
Note: for digitization or duplication of commercial audio or video, please first check the library listings for media. When used in courses, these materials are considered e-reserves, and require copyright clearance and an appropriate delivery channel for your course.
For your own audio and video recordings, the following services are available:
The Humanities Resource Center (HRC) has four Macintosh computers equipped with hardware and software to make capturing clips from VHS cassette tapes and DVDs. Quicktime and Vidi can record straight from the attached DVD and VHS players and provide you with a digital video file. This file can then be converted to any format or size you wish by using MPEG Streamclip. The computers also have DVD burning software in case you need to make a hard copy of your clips.
Media Services can convert a variety of analog tapes (PAL and NTSC) to a different formats and media. Contact Media Services at 258-3196 or media@princeton.edu. A list of formats & charges can be found on their website. Media Services is located at 87 Prospect Avenue.
The New Media Center (NMC) has a large variety of computer software to capture video clips from analog media. Digital tape decks are also available for capturing video from digital tape. This digitized video can then be edited using software such as Final Cut Pro, installed at the NMC.
The NMC offers four different audio recording programs for use inside the NMC lab. The four software programs are Audacity, Soundtrack Pro, QuickTime Pro, and Adobe Audition. The NMC also has an audio recording room specifically built as a quite and private place to record. The audio recording room can be reserved for anytime the NMC is open. Faculty and students can request a one-on-one demonstration on how to use the audio tools.
The NMC is located in the Lewis Library. http://www.princeton.edu/nmc.
